"BEAUTY IS" 37th Annual Awards Dinner Gala

Happy Days with The Black Retail Action Group's "BEAUTY IS" awards dinner last week . You already know that B.R.A.G. does this every October for all of these years. But,I'm used to attending it at the Sheraton in mid-town. It was my first time since they've been having it at "CIPRIANI"on Wall Street here in NYC. Everybody was there looking lovely. If you missed it let me tell you honey, you should have been there. From the moment I walked in the door the service was not to be surpassed as I literally walked two steps to my left a there was a group of people standing there holding hangers and waiting to lighten my load.I was ready as Renee Hunter greeted me at the registration table, looking for my name on the list at the G-III table. She couldn't find it but, I wasn't worried cause my Girl Aretha Blake had assured me a place with she , Jeff Tweedy and the rest of the crew. I headed straight for the open bar. Somehow I just knew it was to be a night like no other. I didn't walk five steps before I 'm bumping into everyone who is anyone in Black fashion. Of course J.J. Thomas & Gloria Hartley were two of the first members of the organization that I greeted. Within 10 minutes the placed was packed . Everywhere I turned my head I was waving or hugging someone I knew. Renauldo Barnette ,Audrey Weaver, Kenol, there's Aretha.Diane Crawford you look amazing! A pleasure meeting you T. Anthony Waller....Walmart's in the house ,big time. Hey Hubert Williams, take a picture of us over here please.....?(Thanks for this Image of Constance White and me.)Let's get another drink girl.........time to take our seats we go to the table ......Hey, there's Renau Daniels. Where are you now? Oh, Ashley Stewart's, Fabulous. I'll be calling you next week. Margo Lewis it's been way too long....Where's Veronica Jones ? Nice to meet you Deshane Granger (of Sean John's Junior's) as we were getting settled at our table here comes the Boss Mr. Tweedy w/his lovely wife Lisa . As they were seated the Show began and I was getting to know the young Designing twins Bruce & Glen Proctor . You've got to meet them for your self. The show was a Huge success. I can't believe I ran into Harriette Cole in the Ladies room. Nubia, when are we doing another conference call?It ran seamlessly as all 23 students got their scholarships and the honorees Lisa Price, John Demsey,Joe Dudley,Sr., Marti Moore,Mikki Taylor, Etan S. Shapiro & last but certainly not least Naomi Campbell( yes, she was humble) received their just due recognition. All , of them Gracious and deserving. See you all soon.I've got alot of following up to do!

FASHION FORWARD EVENT

Hi Fashion Folks,
This month sure did fly by. I hope it was productive for you. As for me ,there is so much going on at the same time that it's hard to keep track of it . I feel a special wave of change for the positive just around the corner. I'm looking forward to what the future holds. This is a time of "Keeping it Real". Even as we approach the Holidays, I don't feel the need for "HYPE". Quite the contrary, "It's time to make every move count". Do something that will impact others. I would like to share with you this flyer that our brother Steven Cutting shared with me . Hopfully some of you can make it to this most worthy event. We all have someone in our lives that has been directly affected by this deadly disease, yet still we're "Blessed", count it all Joy!

F.A.X. My Style Event Oct 6 2003
As we approach the month of October let's remember the fight against Cancer and reflect back on the "My Style" show of 2003. We benefited the Amercan Cancer Society By honoring 6 Breast Cancer survivors! (not to mention the 3,000.00 check) We pulled together 15 different designers of color to represent their own styles. We had Diva Gray& Kim Hampton sing songs of hope . We had a F.I.T. E.O.P. student Fashion competition with Denim Fabric donated by Burlington Mills and awarded 1st ,2nd &3rd prizes to the lucky winners.

Fashion Week

It's hard to believe that it's Fashion Week again!! This is a great time for all of us to come together and show what's really good for the up and coming season. Ask yourself when was the last time your supported a designer of color? The season we are focused on right now is Spring 2008. That's right, I know we are still enjoying the warm weather of this summer but for those of us in the " Fashion Business " this is one of our most important seasons. Even though we do like summer,we like the the Fall market because stores are willing to spend more money on goods. Anyway, here we are in The month of September. The schools are all open .Classes have been in session here in New York for a week now. Back to fashion, we're looking forward to viewing all the collections. I'm upset because know that I'm missing Tracy Reese's show.(she always does her show on the opening Sunday) I've got to be at church today.Who's working the tent shows with the Ground Crew? I remember being a part of all that with the Master Diva herself Ms. Audrey Smaltz. What a wonderful experience that is. With the ground crew you dress the models in all the major shows. You work as a team and you must go through training first. If you're a young person going to college for fashion or a young designer from out of town the ground crew is a great networking base for you to get involved with. check out the website at www.groundcrew.net to see how and if you can get involved.Since I'm not traveling into the city everyday anymore it's hard for me to see many shows . But I try to at least pick one day that I can support as many designers as possible. This time it looks like Wednesday is going to be the day for me since my friend Shaya invited me to her show at Gotham hall. I've inserted her flyer here so that all of you (members and friends)can check it out as well . I respect the way that she has framed her business in that she can help & support up and coming designers while showcasing her company as well. Keep up the good work girlfriend! Hopefully I'll see some of you in the Garment District ths week. Good luck to all the designers. Have a great season and let's not forget to say a special prayer on Tuesday for all those who lost loved ones on 9/11/01.

Thoughts for the day
Today is a great day to be in the world of Fashion & Art. There is so much going on. Magic is over, Puffy's white party is this Labor day weekend and I hear that Usher is going ahead with the marriage after all. I'm trying to secure Beau Hunter's Fabric from the cutting room while furiously working on getting out the Geogette styles for Holiday. Are we barbecuing this weekend?
